There were two movies featuring Sean Penn on TV last night and I ended up watching both.
Mystic River:
I am not so sure what to make of this. I was a little annoyed by the ending (slightly cheesy I felt - the gesture by the Kevin Bacon character to Sean Penn's). I also found the dark lighting and messy sound quality added to the discomfort. Tim Robbins' acting as the disturbed and damaged victim was harrowing.
Dead Man Walking:
A movie I have wanted to see for ages, and one you have to be in the mood for. Incredible performances by both Susan Sarandon (who I always enjoy) and Sean Penn. His character was so both hateful and hurt. Her portrayal as the confused and compelling Nun was convincing in a non-preachy way.
Utterly compelling.
